Sony submit two new PS3 Slim models to the FCC

Posted in PlayStation 3 on February 22, 2010 by James Love

Sony have submitted two new SKU’s to the FCC, CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B, for approval.

What has been changed in the consoles isn’t clear, with components like Bluetooth and the 802.11 wireless remaining as they are in the current consoles.

PS3News is speculating that it could well just be that the wireless components have a new manufacturer and this is the reason for being submitted again to the FCC, which seems like a logical assumption from us.

Sony files patents for universal games controller

Posted in Nintendo Wii, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 on February 19, 2010 by James Love

According to an application made by Sony to the US Patent and Trademark Office, the corporation are looking into the possibility of  creating a universal controller capable of displaying different game controller layouts which could be used with various consoles.

The patent as found by GoRumours describes the perihperal as having an “LCD… present[ing], depending on what type of game console a user has selected, a controller key layout for a first type of game console or a controller key layout for a second type of game console.”

Moreover, the patent also describes the controller as being able to “emulate the key layout of an older controller that may no longer be available, so that an owner of an older game console can still use the console,” so theoretically if the rumours of SEGA wanting to bring old titles, say from the Dreamcast to the PlayStation Store, the transition would be near painless with the adaptable controller.

Valve considering PlayStation 3 development

Posted in PlayStation 3, Valve with tags , on February 19, 2010 by James Love

Left 4 Dead writer Chet Faliszek has offered PlayStation 3 owners a glimmer of hope that Valve titles may eventually make their way over to Sony’s console.

Speaking to Edge Faliszek said, ““Before we do anything on the PS3 we need to be able to support it in the right way, but we’ll look at it, and I’m sure down the road we’ll do it.”

Valve’s MD Gabe Newell had famously described the PlayStation 3 as “a total disaster on so many levels” and “a waste of everybody’s time,” however Faliszek’s statement may indicate a change of heart at the company. Whether Newell ranks among them remains to be seen.
